چکیده

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative pain levels in patients undergoing osteosynthesis of the calcaneus with either a popliteal nerve block or an ankle block. METHODS A retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients undergoing operative fixation of a calcaneal fracture via a sinus tarsi approach between August 2012 and April 2017 in a single foot/ankle specialized center was performed. Single-shot popliteal blocks were placed using ultrasound guidance by an anesthesiologist while ankle blocks were placed by a foot/ankle specialized surgeon. Pain levels were measured through the numerical rating scale (NRS). In total, 83 patients were included in this study; 33 received a popliteal block, and 50 received an ankle block. No statistically significant differences were present in baseline characteristics between the 2 groups. RESULTS Comparable postoperative pain levels were observed in both groups. There was no statistically significant difference in amount of morphine used between the 2 groups. CONCLUSION No differences were found in postoperative pain levels between patients receiving a single-shot popliteal block and patients who received a single-shot ankle block following calcaneal fracture surgery. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III, comparative series.

Pediatric calcaneal fractures

Although operative treatment of displaced, intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus in adults is generally accepted as standard practice, operative treatment for the same fractures in the skeletally immature remains controversial, potentially because the outcome for fracture types (intra- vs. extra-articular) and severity (displaced vs. nondisplaced) have been confounded in studies of childre...

Fractures of the calcaneum. A review of 70 patients.

We have assessed the long-term results after operative and non-operative treatment of undisplaced and displaced calcaneal fractures. At a mean of 6.5 years, we reviewed 70 patients with a calcaneal fracture who were divided into four groups: group 1, 18 patients with undisplaced fractures and a normal Böhler's angle (BA) who had been treated non-operatively; group 2, 23 with intra-articular fra...

Percutaneous treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures

BACKGROUND The outcome after displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures is influenced by the condition of the surrounding soft tissues. To avoid secondary soft tissue complications after surgical treatment, several less-invasive procedures for reduction and fixation have been introduced. The percutaneous technique according to Forgon and Zadravecz is suitable for all types of displaced intra...

Operative versus Non operative treatment of displaced intraarticular fracture of calcaneum: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Various studies comparing operative and non-operative intervention for displaced intrarticular calcaneal fractures have reported conflicting findings in the past. The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the efficacy and safety of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) vis-a-vis conservative management. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing operative and non-oper...

Treatment of subtalar calcanean fractures using trans-osseous limited lateral approach.

BACKGROUND Calcaneal fractures are the most common fractures of the tarsal bones. The majority of these fractures are produced by axial force like a fall from a height. Controversy still exists on the best line of treatment. This study is to evaluate the results of trans-osseous limited lateral approach as a minimally invasive surgical treatment of the displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractu...
